Gudule’s death defending Esmeralda
The Hunchback of Notre DameGudule’s death defending Esmeralda is the final, physical act of a mother who refuses to let the executioner take her daughter without resistance. At the foot of the gallows ladder, her sudden attack interrupts Esmeralda’s execution only briefly: Gudule is killed in the struggle, and the executioner continues upward with Esmeralda.
The execution at dawn
At sunrise, a crowd has gathered at a distance on the Place de Grève to watch what is being dragged toward the gallows. Tristan l’Hermite has kept the curious away from the execution, and no one watches from the nearby windows. From a tower of Notre-Dame Cathedral, however, two men stand silhouetted against the morning sky, looking on.
Henriet Cousin, the executioner, pauses at the foot of the ladder with Esmeralda. He passes the rope around her neck. She opens her eyes, sees the stone gallows above her, and cries, “No! no! I will not!” Gudule has her head buried in her daughter’s garments. She says nothing, but her body quivers and she kisses Esmeralda repeatedly.
Gudule’s resistance
The executioner uses the moment to prise Gudule’s arms away from Esmeralda. Exhausted or despairing, she lets him separate them. He lifts Esmeralda onto his shoulder and sets a foot on the ladder. At that sight, Gudule opens her eyes and rises from the pavement without a cry. She flings herself at the executioner’s hand and bites it, attacking him with the suddenness of an animal striking its prey.
The executioner howls in pain, and those nearby rush to pull his bleeding hand from Gudule’s teeth. She remains profoundly silent. They thrust her back with great brutality; her head falls heavily against the pavement. When they raise her, she falls back again. She is dead.
The interrupted rescue
Gudule’s intervention does not free Esmeralda. The attack momentarily stops the executioner, but the men who rush to help him wrench Gudule away, and her death leaves the condemned girl in his grasp. Without releasing Esmeralda, he begins climbing the ladder again. The scene thus turns a mother’s last defense into a brief interruption of the execution, not an escape from it.
Narrative significance
The violence of the scene lies in its contrast between Gudule’s wordless devotion and the machinery of public punishment. Her repeated kisses give way to a bodily act of resistance when Esmeralda is carried toward the gallows; the executioner’s bleeding hand is the immediate mark of that resistance, while Gudule’s death is its cost. The execution proceeds even after this intimate bond has erupted into open struggle: the ladder remains before Esmeralda, and the executioner resumes his climb.
